Rainbow Peace Doves

Lesson Plan, Grades K-6, School Smart, Model Magic, Twisteez, Watercolor Magic, Colour Shapers


Do you feel that the students in your school would benefit by learning some skills that would help them get along with others and have appreciation for the things that really matter? This project could be the centerpiece of a week in which the whole student body focuses on building good relationships and appreciating what is good in their lives. Each student could make a peace dove, with a “peace” wish on the back. In a special ceremony, students could exchange their dove with another student’s. One way to introduce this idea would be to use Todd Parr’s popular book, The Peace Book, (Little, Brown and Company; 2004). Even though the book is a picture book, the ideas apply to people of all ages. Each student would think about what would help bring them peace. They would then create a colorful Rainbow Peace Dove using primarily Crayola® Model Magic®. The directions can be adapted to all grade levels. The project will take at least two class periods on different days to allow for drying time.


  • Students will use a variety of media to express a feeling of peace, CONTENTment and/or happiness in a colorful dove form.

Cut railroad board into small pieces, about 5” x 7”.


Depending on the age and ability of the students, have them draw a dove shape about 4” x 6” on a piece of railroad board and cut it out. With young students, you may need to precut the dove shapes or provide dove-shaped templates for them to trace.


Cut out the dove. Punch a hole near the top of its head and another near the end of its tail.


Tie one end of a 6” or longer piece of string through each of the holes so the dove shape can hang from the string.


Make a fist-size ball of Model Magic®, about 2-Oz.


Roll out the Model Magic® with a rolling pin until it is about 1/4” thick. As you roll it, stretch the Model Magic so that the dove-shaped cardboard will fit on it.


Lay the railroad board shape on the rolled out Model Magic® and gently press it in to imprint the shape. Remove the railroad board and use the scissors to cut the Model Magic® into a dove shape that is about 1/4” bigger all around than the imprint.


Pinch the edges of the Model Magic® up over the edges of the railroad board so that the front of the railroad board is completely covered by the Model Magic® and the edges of the back of the railroad board are wrapped in Model Magic®. (There should be about a quarter of an inch overlap of Model Magic® on the back edges of the railroad board.) Pull the cord or string so that it comes straight up through the top edge of the Model Magic® dove, so that the dove may still hang from it. Repair any tears in the Model Magic® from the cord.


Students may choose to roll out extra Model Magic® and cut shapes to add to the dove. They could make a wing shape, a head shape, an eye shape or whatever they desire to raise that area of the dove. Press the shapes onto the proper area of the Model Magic® dove to adhere them.


Students may choose to use the Colour Shapers™ or other tools to impress designs into the Model Magic® dove.


Have students bend the Twisteez wires into zigzags, spirals or other shapes. Cut to the length desired to decorate portions of the dove, such as the head tail and wings. Crimp the end of the wire that will be embedded in the dove. Stick the wire into the Model Magic® and pinch the Model Magic® closed over the crimped end of the wire so that when the Model Magic® dries, it will not pull out.


Let the dove dry 24 hours or longer.


Students should now determine what colors they will make the dove. Colors can be used to convey peace, joy, and happiness. The dove may be colored with liquid watercolors and/or markers. If watercolors are used, be sure to use undiluted liquid watercolors and also be sure not to wet the brush too much as the paint will run.


Glue fluffs at the head, tail and wings if desired.


After the paint is dry, students should write a statement about what brings them peace on a slip of paper and glue it to the back of the dove.


The dove is now ready for display and/or exchanging.
