General’s Kimberly Watercolor Pencils and General’s Multi-Pastel Pencils will be the vibrant colorful vehicles for students to create a painting with a humorous ‘Story Telling’ theme. This project will be done on a heavy mixed media toned blue paper to hone student’s artistic and language arts skills.

Objectives

Create and gain first hand knowledge of the applications, techniques and effects of watercolor and pastel pencils on a heavy mixed media toned blue paper.

Gain an appreciation of the mixed media process itself.

Interject ‘humor’ into their art work with skills gained in the application of Language Arts, as well as those from Visual Arts.

Put into practice the Elements and Principles of Art & Design.

Instructions

Inform students that they will be using both General Pencils Kimberly Watercolor and Multi-Pastel Pencils to create a painting that evokes ‘Story Telling in Art’ with the use of a humorous theme and title. The painting will enable students to draw upon their Language Arts skills as well as those from the Visual Arts. The old phrase ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ fits this lesson plan!

Show students the paintings of both J.M.W. Turner (1775 -1851) and current day artist, Johanned Vloothuis who incorporated watercolors and pastels in their mixed media work creating mood and depth.

Instruct Students to: Research mixed media painting and discover techniques and artists that used the method.

Review the Elements and Principles of Design.

Brainstorm for humorous ideas for their compositions.

Use brown kraft paper to develop a balanced composition in the form of a line drawing.

Instruct students on how to use transfer paper to transfer their designs onto the toned blue paper.

Use pieces of toned blue paper to test watercolor pigments and observe effects on the colors and values when using a colored ground.

Review and practice watercolor painting techniques i.e. washes, layering, wet into wet, lifting colors, stippling, and blending. Note that General’s Kimberly Watercolor Pencils have vibrant colors that can be blended with a brush, drawn directly into washes, or dipped into water for intense color, are semi- transparent, and excellent for layering. Colors can be lifted from the substrate by using the Factis Magic Black Eraser!

Review and practice Pastel Pencil Techniques: i.e. working from dark to light, feathering, dusting, scumbling, using just the point for linear marks and holding it on its side to cover bigger areas. The Pastel Pencils will add depth and mood to the work but must be applied only on dry water colored areas.

Using a very light-colored pastel pencil, block in light and dark area of the painting on the toned blue paper. Note that the Multi-Pastel Pencils have a combination eraser/burnisher tip and work well for this project also.

Start painting with the Kimberly Watercolor Pencils and slowing build up layers of color. Keep the theme of the painting in mind to help develop little added details to get your humorous point across to the viewer.
