Juicy Fruits

Lesson Plan, Grades K-6, Art, Health/Wellness, School Smart, Art Time, Crayola, Scotch

Any age student would enjoy making these miniature paintings of luscious, juicy fruits, especially if your class could make and enjoy a fruit salad together first! Using a variety of materials to create a glistening, glittering look will add to the fun. This lesson would be a great tie-in to a unit on nutrition in Health or Science classes.

  • Students will use a variety of materials along with traditional tempera paints to create a juicy look to paintings of fruit.

CONTENT Standard #1: Understanding and applying media, techniques and processes.
Grades K-4: Students will use different media, techniques and processes to communicate ideas, experiences and stories.
Grades 5-8: Students will intentionally take advantage of the qualities and characteristics of art media, techniques and processes to enhance communication of their experiences and ideas.

Make a fruit salad to eat with your class or provide other experiences in which students can actually see and taste real fruit. Discuss the importance of including fruit in the diet. Also discuss the appearance and the sensations of eating fruit.

Demonstrate the use of the various materials in the list above that can create a "juicy" look to a tempera painting.

Cut a small piece of watercolor paper (5 in x 9 in or 5 in x 5 in) and tape the edges with Artist's Tape.

Choose a fruit to paint and sketch it, cut open. Include in your drawing an indication of where the fruit is sitting, e.g. a table top, a plate, etc.

Paint the fruit, using the additions of some of the shimmering media demonstrated to create the appearance of Juicy Fruits.

Remove the tape.

Optional: You may wish to mount the painting on a small piece of board, such as railroad board, chipboard or poster board.
