Enlarging a Famous Artwork into a Banner

Description
Students will use the Grid Method to reproduce or enlarge a famous piece of art using precut 8"" x 8"", 2-sided, heavy-weight chip board. These squares have predrilled holes for easy assembly and display.
Objectives
- Students will explore famous periods of art such as Contemporary, Classical, Cubism, and Impressionism and then select a particular Artist and their work to reproduce into a large banner/quilt.
- Students will divide into groups of four to grid the picture of their choice for enlarging.
- Students will discover through this process the mathematical formula for enlargement.

Instructions
1
Discuss with students the selection of the piece of art chosen to turn into a banner.
2
Explain how to use the grid method using a ruler, a copy of the image, and a pencil to draw lines on the image.
3
Draw the grid lines on paper using a mechanical pencil so that you can get a thin, precise line. Draw lightlyso that lines can be easily erased when completed.
4
The important thing to remember when gridding isthat you must maintain a 1:1 ratio. A 1:1 ratio means that the original artwork is divided into equal-sized squares, with each square corresponding to a single chip board tile.
5
After the drawing is copied on each of the squares each square should be numbered and lettered the same as the grid squared piece of the painting. (i.e. square 1a should have the piece of the art work 1a.) Each student then would get four squares and four pieces of the art work to paint with matchingnumbers/letters.
6
Paint each square using Richeson gouache, reproducing the picture square on to the 8" x 8" chipboard square.
