Autobiographical CD Cases and Booklets

Lesson Plan, Grades 9-12, Art, Art History, Canson

Description

This lesson focuses on the individuality of the artists and memorable events in the artists' lives. The student designs and makes a compact disc booklet and liner notes reflecting a real autobiographical event or chain of events. An original album title and track list is created by the artist. The final project is a mixed media collage of photographs, printed words, stenciled images, markers, and acrylic paint.

Instructions

1

Show images from actual compact discs, famous albums, and liner note artwork. Students may bring their own CDs to class to share during the exploration process. Pay close attention to the length of the booklet and the way it is folded or assembled. Does it have staples or an accordion fold?

2

Lay out the design of the booklet on an extra piece of paper. Prepare printed collage pieces using Canson® Digital inkjet photo papers and decide where the printouts will be placed. Cut out blank white pages for the booklet from Canson® Mixed Media Paper.

3

Using a brayer, roll out a quick background onto your white Mixed Media Paper. Using several colors could make your background more interesting.

4

Cut out a stencil using a stencil burning tool and stencil film. This stencil can be used over and over again on your background. Or, you could choose to cut several different stencils for variation. Use the stencil to paint your background. The stencil can be used again if you make stickers or merchandise for your “album”.

5

Compose your photographs and attach with double-sided tape or rubber cement. Fold your booklet to fit into the CD case. Your design should cover the edges and back of the CD, just like a professionally produced case.

6

Have a class critique of student artwork to discover the stories behind each album!
