Aquarelle Crayon Monotype

Lesson Plan, Grades 3-12, Art, Sax

Description

An Aquarelle crayon monotype is a unique process in which you can use a combination of drawn images and printmaking techniques. The result is a one-of-a-kind print using non-toxic water based mediums. The hand transfer is made by pressing damp paper over the monoprinting sheet, re-hydrating the Aquarelle crayons.

Objectives

Instructions

1

Prepare paper to a damp state by soaking or spraying. Soak heavy papers (60 to 70-lb. white drawing) for 15 to 20 minutes. Lightweight papers can be sprayed for a few minutes.

2

Apply Aquarelle crayons to the plastic sheet by drawing directly on the sheet. Another technique would be to dissolve shavings of the Aquarelle crayons in a small amount of water and apply this colored wash onto the sheet.

3

Damp-dry paper between paper towels/blotters/newsprint/white drawing paper.

4

Place damp paper over sheet, cover with dry cover sheet (white drawing paper). This serves as a sizing catcher and cushion.

5

Hand rub with wooden spoon to transfer/lift color. You can check on how the image is transferring by keeping one end of the paper on the sheet and lifting the opposite end. If the image appears light, apply more pressure.

6

Remove the cover sheet. With the brayer carefully continue to impress the damp paper over the sheet. This insures that as much color is being transferred as possible.

7

Pull/lift the print and allow to dry.

8

Additive mixed media such as Aquarelle watercolor pencils and watercolor paints can be incorporated to enhance the original monotype.

9

Curate the print in pencil in the blank area below the image. Write in the lower left corner monotype and edition number 1/1. In the center write the title. In the lower right corner write the artist's signature and date.
