Whacky Woven Wonderfoam Critters

Lesson Plan, Grades 3-6, Art, Science, School Smart, Wonderfoam, Twisteez

Get your students excited about the animals they are studying in science by creating these imaginative weavings. Wonderfoam strips combined with Twisteez wire may be woven to create the body or belly of the animals. Wonderfoam cut into shapes or precut Wonderfoam Shapes can be used to add details to transform the weaving into a Whacky Creature.

  • Students will review how to weave and will employ the weaving technique in creating their animal picture. They will review the terms “warp” and “weft”.
  • Students will use other media to effectively convey their animal’s character.
  • Students will use the elements of design to create a visually pleasing artwork.

Help students decide on an animal and find pictures of that kind of animal. Help them determine if the body shape should be long and narrow or like a square.

Cut some Wonderfoam strips that will be the length of the body and some that will be the width. Lay them out side by side to see if you have enough. (Remember that there will be open spaces in between.)

Fold each strip in half and use a hole punch to make holes through both layers near the center and about an inch from the end.

Weave a Twisteez wire in and out of each of the holes in the Wonderfoam strips, giving them a little more stability. Leave the ends of the wire long for now.

Line up all the Wonderfoam/Twisteez strips that are the length of the body (the warp strips). Place one Craft Stick at the top and one at the bottom of the strips. Wrap the ends of the wires around the Craft Stick twice.

Review weaving process.

Start weaving in the strips that are the width of the body (the weft strips) until you have completed the weaving. You may want to trim the ends of the widthwise pieces so the body looks more curved.

Fold the ends of the widthwise (weft) Twisteez back under the Wonderfoam strip.

Now imagine a head, legs and tail or other body parts for your animal and cut them out of the Wonderfoam sheets. Use the Wonderfoam shapes and other craft items such as Wiggle Eyes to add detail. Glue the animal to a piece of Railroad Board that is cut to fit it. Glue on details. Trim the visible ends of the Twisteez to desired length.

Glue the Railroad Board to a slightly larger Railroad Board and add more foam shapes as a border design if desired.
