The design of educational spaces can play a key role in helping keep communities safe and healthy, today and every day. However, following expert guidelines requires lots of planning. The current CDC recommendation to space student desks and seating at least 6’ apart can mean reconfiguring classrooms and potentially refitting non-instructional spaces like gymnasiums and cafeterias to serve as classrooms. Provisions need to be made to keep students as well as their belongings separated by using wellness screens and individually labeled containers or areas. Portable hand washing stations and signage with healthy habit reminders will be critical.
