About This Item

Description

"Shock" your students again and again with this fun static electricity aid: the Leyden Jar! This one is specifically designed for classroom statitic electricity demonstrations/experiments and comes with durable inner and outer plate, a plastic dielectric, and instructions. Measures 8 inches tall with 3 inch diameter.

Did you know the first device capable of storing an electric charge was the Leyden Jar (invented in November 1745 by a German named Ewald G. von Kleist)? Ewald's discovery was made by accident one day when he touched his electric generator to a nail stuck into a medicine bottle through the cork. . .and much later, received a great shock (literally) when he touched the nail! Ewald had discovered that the nail and the jar were capable of temporarily storing electrons -- which today is a device we now call the capacitor. Capacitors (like this Leyden Jar) are used in every form of electronic equipment.
